You think UHPC is expensive? Well, the savings you get from using it frequently outweigh the higher unit cost of the material because you can design ultra-slim and ultra-lightweight structures. In the picture below: instead of renting an expensive crane, the project backhoe was used to lift the lightweight UHPC panels into place. Transportation was cheaper. Instead of transporting one traditional panel per truck, 3 UHPC panels fit on the truck. The light panels resulted in a commensurately light foundation system. Then, of course, the cherry on top is the terrific durability of the bridge resulting in great savings due to the greatly lengthened maintenance cycle.
