First Culvert in the US made with UHPC
HiPer steel fibers have been used to reinforce the first UHPC culvert application in the US. The picture below shows the culvert slabs being poured.
HiPer steel fibers have been used to reinforce the first UHPC culvert application in the US. The UHPC was made using our free recipe and mixed in a traditional ready mix truck (with no modifications). The UHPC achieved 24 ksi compressive strength. The culvert panels were 6.5" thick x 8ft x 15 ft. The panels would have been at least 10" thick with a much higher steel reinforcement ratio had they been made of regular concrete. Not only did this project achieve at least a 40% reduction in superstructure weight, it resulted in a structural system with extremely high durability that will lead to great savings in the life cycle costs. It will also have a much lower carbon footprint over its lifetime, one that is at least 75% less than a traditional concrete culvert.
